We welcome everyone in the community to come along and have a look around your new community building, hear about the heritage programme and sign up for some of the exciting activities that will run from the centre. All welcome, no booking required.

So, what’s in a name?

Stirchley Baths Tour

After asking local people and stakeholders to help in the decision making process to choose the official name of the new centre, it has been decided that the new name will be STIRCHLEY BATHS.

Importantly the name is both a nod to the building’s heritage and where it is, but is also a title that many in the community have already been using over the last couple of years when talking about the building transforming from dereliction in to a fantastic new community building.

Your 2015 Stirchley Time Capsule

As part of the Stirchley Baths project I have been gathering items for the new time capsule. This has taken me on a journey from a drop-in session at Stirchley Library; to St Andrews church; Stirchley Baths construction team; Loaf Community Bakery and the Late Summer Bash. The new time capsule with be ‘buried’ beneath the pool and visible through a perspex window.

Among the donations are a Stirchley Park t-shirt, school cardigan, Bournville Station train ticket, library card, beer mat, building plans and recipe for the Stirchley loaf! These are some of the people I have met along the way:

Craft Commission: Ceremonial Key

Stirchley Baths is looking to commission a Birmingham based, emerging or early career craft practitioner to develop and produce a ceremonial key inspired by the heritage of the building. When the building was opened in 1911 a beautiful ceremonial key was presented. The 2015 key will be used at the opening event of the building, and both the 1911 and 2015 key will be on display within the building on long term exhibition.

The successful craft practitioner will include a digital element to the commission also, meaning the 2015 key have a wider use than just a physical key, it will have a digital presence too. The commission is open to all types of crafts people, so the final work might be made from anything from fabric, wood, plastic or recycled materials. 

Applicants should send up to 300 words about their practice, photographs depicting examples of previous work and an ideas on how you might approach the project to Stirchleybaths@gmail.com.

Fee: £500, plus up to £500 material costs (expenses paid on receipt on delivery of work).

Deadline for applications: Monday 14 September 2015.
The commission must be completed by Friday 16 October 2015.
